Now is the time to sell your home. The spring market is right around the corner but putting your home on the market right now is a great idea. Inventory is low right now, so there is less competition. Once spring has sprung, more homeowners will be listing their homes and there will be more competition. Buyers looking at this time of year are generally serious about buying and ready to move ahead.
Now that you’ve decided to sell, it’s time to get your house ready for the market. Start to de-personalize the home. Start packing away family photos and family heirlooms. You want your buyer to picture themselves living there. Next, it’s time to declutter. Put away books and knick knacks. Clean your counters and tables. It’s a head start on packing that you will eventually need to do.
Clean out your cabinets and closets. Make them look organized and neat. Buyers will be opening up closet doors and cabinets and drawers. The neater and uncluttered it looks, the better. You might want to rent a storage unit to put away excess furniture. Just leave a minimum of furniture in each room. The less cluttered the rooms are, the bigger they seem. Put away any blinds or lights you absolutely want to bring with you. This way the buyer has no chance of getting attached to them and asking that they stay.
Make minor repairs. Fix leaky faucets, patch walls, fix squeaky doors and jammed draws. If your walls have bright colors, you may want to consider painting them a neutral color. Then, clean, clean and clean again. Wash the windows, so the sun shines in and keep everything squeaky clean. A bright, sunny home is always attractive to buyers. It’s a little early in the year to worry about landscaping, but do what you can to keep the yard shoveled, neat and attractive.
